Impact vests and life vests
An impact vest softens crashes on the water and adds some buoyancy, while a life vest is made for flotation. Both are recommended while learning and mandatory in some schools and organised events.
What to choose
- Impact vest — thin, flexible, for jumps and tricks; it does not replace a life vest.
- Life vest — more buoyancy, suitable for beginners and riding far from shore.
Fit
The vest must be snug so it does not ride up in a crash. Check arm mobility — if it hinders you when pulling the bar, it is too small or too stiff.
Complete protection
Pair it with a helmet and a wetsuit of the right thickness.
